Find out more about the 4 main types of personal mobility scooters.
Mobility scooters are the perfect solution for anyone who finds it difficult to walk for any more than a very short distance. There are four main types of personal mobility scooters. Each one has many different makes and models.
1. Travel Mobility Scooters
A scooter shouldn’t only be for at home use. Travel mobility scooters are the perfect take along scooter. They are smaller in size than a full-sized scooter, and lighter in weight. Because they are portable they can be taken on vacation or on a quick shopping trip to the mall.
There are two main types of travel scooters. There are folding mobility scooters and portable scooters. There are some advantages to each.
As the name suggests, a folding scooter folds up when it’s not being used. That makes it easy to tuck away in a small area once you’ve arrived at your destination. Or it can be stowed in a van or SUV. Folding scooters are designed to be lifted by a single person.
Portable scooters can be disassembled into several pieces. That makes it easier to fit into a trunk or store it in a small room, where space may be at a premium. It also makes each piece lighter and almost effortless to handle. It takes almost no time to put back together when you’re ready to use it.
2. Heavy Duty Mobility Scooters
These scooters are at the opposite end of the spectrum from a travel scooter. The heavy duty mobility scooter is designed for a couple of main purposes.
A heavy duty scooter combines the stability and comfort of a standard scooter with more durability and a greater capacity. They can carry between 300 and 500 pounds, which is much greater than a regular scooter.
Every part of this type of scooter is built on a larger scale too, adding to its comfort and overall stability. This makes them perfect for taller, heavier individuals, or those needing to bring heavy medical equipment along with them.
If you want to take a scooter like this along with you, you will have to use a lift or carrier. This accessory can be attached to a hitch for outside the vehicle transport. To carry it inside requires a slightly different set-up.
3 3 Wheel Mobility Scooters
The main defining characteristic of 3 wheel mobility scooters is the fact that they have three wheels. The front of the scooter has only a single wheel which makes this type of scooter great for smaller areas.
There is no scooter on the market that can beat the three wheel scooter for maneuverability. They have a very tight turning ratio so turns are smooth and fluid. No need to go back and forth trying to navigate and complete a turn in a confined area. The expression “it can turn on a dime” was coined for 3 wheel scooters.
And you aren’t giving up comfort when you opt for this type of scooter. They are available with plush captain’s seats and ample leg room. Smaller doesn’t mean less comfortable.
Although at its best in an indoor area, a 3 wheel scooter can be used outdoors as well. With a longer wheelbase and wider tires, the issue of stability has been addressed.
4. Four Wheel Mobility Scooters
Although not as practical for indoor use, you just can’t beat four wheel mobility scooters for outdoor use. Because they have 4 wheels, they are going to be a lot more stable than three wheel scooters. They come with bigger tires as well, for better control overall.
An option available on some 4 wheel scooters is four-wheel drive. With this option, you can be sure you’ll get enough traction to move no matter what the conditions. Many of these scooters have anti-tipping wheels for even greater stability. They are also capable of faster speeds than the 3 wheel scooter.
Four wheel scooters have been the standard in the industry for many years, so you will find a lot of different features and accessories readily available.
When looking for a mobility scooter, take into consideration where you will use it primarily. With the huge variety of personal mobility scooters available, you will certainly find a scooter to suit your needs.
